Uber Permitted To Operate At LAX

Feb 29, 2016
Daily

If you’ve ever ridden an Uber or a Lyft to or from an airport, you know the drill: Your driver is taking a huge risk, as most ride-sharing companies cannot legally operate at airports, while taxi cabs can.

That’s all changing at Los Angeles International Airport, which last month allowed Uber’s ride-sharing drivers to operate at the facility, picking up and dropping off passengers legally. Uber joins Lyft as legal alternatives to taxis at LAX. Lyft gained approval in December.

These companies now have legal access to some 74.5 million travelers who came through LAX in 2015. Uber will operate its UberX vehicles to and from the airport’s upper level, and Uber Black, SUV and Luxe will be available on the lower level. Any airport-related trips will incur an extra $4.

“We are bringing LAX passengers what they have been asking for — better access to reliable, convenient transportation from the airport. Tomorrow, those options expand dramatically with the arrival of UberX,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was quoted in USA Today.

“Data from the first two weeks of the service show there were nearly 50,000 drop-off and pick-up trips. Travelers benefit, as well as the airport. Revenue generated will be invested to continue improving LAX,” said  CEO Deborah Flint, CEO, Los Angeles World Airports, of Lyft’s success so far.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.

Why Japan Is Best Explored by Sea with Princess

Japan is a destination that rewards repeat visits because no two regions — or seasons —  feel quite the same. One moment, you’re wandering through centuries-old geisha districts in Kanazawa. The next, you’re watching neon reflections dance across Tokyo streets long after midnight.
