In anticipation of the 2016 Summer Olympics, Brazil is allowing U.S. tourists to visit for up to 90 days without a visa. The country is hoping to draw people for the Olympics, which are taking place in Rio de Janeiro Aug. 5 through 21.
The waiver of the usual visa requirements is in effect June 1 through September 18. The waiver also applies to citizens with passports from Japan, Australia and Canada.
Brazil’s economy could use the boost, and it’s hoping to see travelers from these four countries increase by 20 percent during that time period.
Normally, U.S. travelers have to make an appointment at a Brazilian consulate and have an already purchased round-trip ticket to nab a visa, which carries a $160 price tag.
