Staying in a private vacation rental, whether with Airbnb, HomeAway or another, affords travelers certain perks often not found in a standard hotel. However, an obvious downside is the prevalent lack of technology features. As more hotels boast impressive new tech offerings, from mobile room keys to personal in-room entertainment streaming, can the booming vacation rental industry stay strong? It’s estimated short-term private vacation rentals will grow to a $51 billion industry in the next four years. According to a study by August Home, Inc., a primary reason for this growth is the belief private hosts are more willing than corporate hotels to create the best stay experience possible. Many travelers further state they feel more at home in a vacation rental. Adding the latest tech amenities to the experience holds additional benefits for both hosts and travelers. Travelers are straightforward with which tech features they want, with a high focus on tech for safety and convenience. When polled, 80 percent of leisure travelers and 92 percent of business travelers show more interest in vacation rentals as opposed to hotels when properties offer perks such as smart locks, doorbell cameras, mobile keys and streaming services. In addition, 60 percent admit they would pay more for rentals that offer these features. Other popular in-demand tech amenities include smart security systems, touchscreen appliances and mobile app controls for thermostats and lighting. “The short-term rental market continues to grow, fueled by tech innovation. The simple addition of a smart lock and a doorbell camera helps new hosts get into the hosting business. Now they can greet guests and manage their property from anywhere.
