With all eyes on Rome in recent weeks and an anticipated uptick in travel to Italy in light of the papal turnover, it’s a good time to review the mechanics of Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO). Also known as Leonardo da Vinci Airport, the airport ranks among the top 10 busiest airports in Europe.
Located 16 miles southwest of Rome, FCO offers convenient access to the city via rail, taxi and bus. Leonardo Express trains depart the airport station at 30-minute intervals. One-way tickets, available at the departure platform, cost €11 (about $14) and expire Ticket 90 minutes after validation.
The FM1 metro line connects the airport to stations in Roma Tiburtina, Fara Sabina, Poggio Mirteto and Orte. For service to Rome, connect to the Rome Metro at Tiburtina Station or at Ostiense Station. To travel by taxi, look for white cabs outside the terminal. Taxis operate on a fixed-fare system for travel between the airport and downtown. Other destinations are charged by metered price.
