According to Allianz Global Assistance’s Top 10 Holiday Destinations report, New York City and London are the most popular domestic and international destinations among Americans for Christmas travel.
After reviewing nearly 1 million holiday plans for travel during the week of Christmas, Allianz Global Assistance found New York City is the most popular destination with 113,326 bookings made, followed by Los Angeles, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, San Francisco, Honolulu, Boston, Denver, Miami and Newark.
International travel is also a popular trend during the holidays, with a majority of Americans heading to London for Christmas, followed by San Juan, Cancún, Tokyo, Paris, Santiago, Puerto Vallarta, Manila, Santo Domingo and Bangkok.
While many travel during the holidays to escape the cold and enjoy non-traditional celebrations, visiting friends and family remains the biggest reason Americans travel during the holidays. According to the Bureau of Transportation, family visits account for 43 percent of long-distance trips during Christmas and New Year’s.
As for holiday travel challenges, if Thanksgiving was any indication, travel in the coming weeks will surely be busy but relatively smooth. While travelers feared chaos over the Thanksgiving holiday, Department of Homeland Security secretary Jeh Johnson reported 95 percent of those traveling Nov. 21–28 cleared security checkpoints in less than 15 minutes, and 99 percent were processed in less than 30 minutes.
With more efficient security screenings and advanced planning to accommodate for a large number of travelers, airports and other transportation providers appear to be prepared for holiday travel, but only time and post-holiday stats will tell.
