As if cat cafes weren’t absurd enough, Tokyo now has a hedgehog café. It builds on the wildly popular cat café model, which involves roving cats in a café setting, attracting animal lovers who do not have pets of their own. Just like at cat cafes, visitors to the hedgehog café must pay to enter and interact with the animals.
The café is called Harry, a riff on the Japanese word for “hedgehog.” And so far, it’s incredibly popular, attracting lines of people gathering to spend time in a bright room in the Roppongi entertainment district. The café, opened in February, holds 20 to 30 hedgehogs of different breeds in glass tanks.
Visitors dish out 1,000 yen (about $9) on weekdays and more — 1,300 yen — on holidays for an hour of playtime with the animals. Hedgehogs are a popular pet in Japan despite their ability to spike those who love them.
Thousands of cat cafes are springing up, mostly in Asia, but also in other countries around the world. Is the hedgehog café idea the next one to take off in other places?
