With status as the nation’s oldest continuously occupied city and fresh from celebrating its 400th anniversary commemorating the day Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Avilés stepped ashore in 1565 and planted a flag in the wide, sandy beaches, St. Augustine, Fla., offers visitors more than just a lovely blend of history and charm among its cobbled streets. Beyond the beaches, museums and stunning architecture, visitors can find plenty of modern diversions. For starters, enroll in Surf Camp at the Surf Station for private or group lessons, consistently voted the area’s top choice for surf instruction. Experienced teachers are ready to share the best insider tips and the fundamentals of wave shredding, even if you’ve never tried. Summer Surf Camps are led by members of the Station’s surfing team, many of whom have traveled the world in search of the best waves. Lessons include boards, wetsuits when necessary and professional CPR certified instructors. Once you’ve dried off, head to San Sebastian Winery on the edge of the historic district for a complimentary guided tour of the 18,000-square-foot production facility and a tasting of sparkling, dessert and premium Florida wines created from native Muscadine grapes. Located in one of railroad tycoon Henry Flagler’s former 1923-era East Coast Railway buildings, the winery is the second largest in the state, and has storage capacity for 40,000 gallons of wine. Native varieties of Noble, bronze Carlos and Welder Muscadines, plus Florida hybrid grapes including Stover, Suwannee and Blanc Du Bois are used in production. Tours are offered daily. Afterwards, head to The Cellar Upstairs Wine, Jazz & Blues Bar on the winery’s rooftop to enjoy a glass of wine, light fare, live music and fabulous views of the city.
