Air India is set to join the Star Alliance network this summer and become the first Indian airline to join a global airline alliance. The national carrier will officially become a member July 11, allowing members of its Flying Returns frequent-flyer loyalty program to earn and redeem miles on flights operated by any Star Alliance member airline and members of other Star Alliance carriers’ loyalty programs to earn and redeem miles on Air India-operated flights. “We look forward to welcoming Air India passengers to our global network and offering them our Alliance benefits,” said Jeffrey Goh, chief operating officer, Star Alliance. “At the same time we are pleased to be providing our existing customers improved access to a region which includes the world’s fifth-largest domestic aviation network.” Air India was accepted as a future member of the alliance in 2007, but the integration process was halted in July 2011 to allow the carrier to focus on its merger with Indian Airlines. The airline will add 400 daily flights and 35 new destinations in India to the alliance’s network.
