Is your dream summer vacation to sink your toes in the sand and listen to the sound of the ocean waves? If so, your summer plans line up with statistics from summers past. A review of Americans’ summer plans by Allianz Global Assistance found U.S. travelers choose to spend vacations at the shore and seeking the thrills of theme parks.

Orlando, Fla., topped the list for travelers taking domestic vacations May 29­–Sept. 4, with nearly 9 percent of Americans traveling to Orlando during the summer. Las Vegas was the second-most popular destination, followed by Honolulu, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Maui, Boston, Denver and Fort Lauderdale.

Internationally, Americans likely head to Mexico and the Caribbean, as eight of the top 10 destinations abroad are south of the border. Cancun topped the list with 17 percent of travelers naming it their destination of choice. With growing popularity, it’s no surprise Punta Cana is in the No. 2 spot. Rounding out the top 10 international destinations in order of popularity are Los Cabos, Montego Bay, San Juan, Aruba, London, St. Thomas, Nassau and Paris.

In line with summer travel trends, the study shows the most planned trips to top destinations like Orlando are for groups of two or more, indicating families and multigenerational groups are using summer months to travel together.
