Paris’s famous Avenue de Champs-Élysées is also one of its most busy boulevards. Starting in April, the thoroughfare will be designated car-free once a month.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, a champion of environmental causes, announced plans to ban cars from the eight-lane Champs for one designated day monthly. The plan fits with Hidalgo’s commitment to improving air quality by reducing pollution. France struggles with air pollution and has the highest percentage of diesel cars on the road in Europe. Hidalgo is working to rid Paris of all diesel cars by 2020.
Hidalgo wanted to prove “Paris can operate without cars,” so this past fall she banned vehicles between Bastille and the Champs as well as the outer Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vicennes.
Similar plans are underway in Oslo, which plans to ban all cars from its city center within the next four years. Dublin has made a similar proposal, as has Helsinki.
