The Tsutaya bookstore in the high-end Daikanyama neighborhood of Tokyo is a series of large, connected bookstores, outdoor spaces, a bar area and a lounge, creating a communal space dedicated to bringing human connection, intellectual stimulation and a refuge from the digital age together.

Its selections range from vinyl records to international magazines and everything in between. The bookstore was designed by the Klein Dytham architecture firm, and brings the power of print and good lighting to life.

In an age when many feel disconnected due to technology, it’s a welcome environment. The concept of the space could be expanded into hotels and airports, and Tsutaya announced a partnership with a developer in Japan to make shared spaces in apartment buildings as well.

The brand helps real estate developers design the communal areas of residential complexes based on the neighborhood and unique composition of the building. The communal spaces aim to transform spaces once seen as only a route to an apartment door into spaces where residents can interact as a community.

Other brands follow suit. Sansiri, a Thailand-based property developer, recently invested in London-based publisher Monocle. The partnership brings Monocle’s thinking on urban design together with apartment living.
