September and October are the perfect months to explore Spain’s Rioja region — especially if you love to move at an unhurried tempo. The landscape’s winding roads, villages and sun dappled vineyards are ideal for biking and walking tours, punctuated with leisurely meals and cultural experiences. Butterfield & Robinson can create a bespoke journey that highlights the area with wine tastings, chef-led cooking classes, and visits to renowned sites including sections of the centuries-old Camino de Santiago pilgrim’s road and the modern edifice of Frank Gehry’s stunning Marques de Riscal Hotel.
A night or two at the Marques de Riscal can be part of the fun. State of the art technology, wooded floors, raw maple walls, Gehry-designed lamps, Italian marble and fine linens are part of the soothing, contemporary décor. Deluxe rooms in the Gehry Wing or Spa Wing have 12-foot ceilings, asymmetrical angles and lovely vineyard views. Nine executive suites have additional features such as sitting areas and blackout screens; and the exclusive Gehry suite includes stunning floor-to-ceiling windows, black and green marble bathrooms and panoramic views of the Cantabric Mountains. Prices, itinerary possibilities and departure dates are available from Butterfield & Robinson upon request.
