Taipei Making Metro Names More Tourist-Friendly

May 24, 2016
Daily

Taipei Metro will change the names of its lines and stations to be more easily understood by tourists. Now, new line names will be color-coded and stations will be assigned alphanumeric codes. The lines are currently numbered and stations are named in Chinese and English. But visitors are “often confused by the station names, even in English, since many of them are romanisations of the station names in Chinese,” Taipei mayor Ko Wen-je said to Taiwan’s Central News Agency. Now, for example, Line 3 will be known as the Green Line. Its stations will be G01, G02 and on. Interchange stations will be assigned additional codes, one for each line they serve. The move follows a similar one made in Tokyo last month. The city’s complex transport system was thought to be too confusing for visitors, who had trouble remembering and pronouncing unfamiliar place names. One railway operator decided to start assigning alphanumeric codes to 276 of the city’s stations. Under Tokyo’s system, each station will now have a two-letter and two-digit code, and lines are now color coded. The station names, already shown in English, are also going to be displayed in Chinese and Korean. A similar alphanumeric system is already in place in Osaka. Newsletter sign-up
