Flying with Kids

It had been decades since I'd last flown with little ones, so admittedly I was a bit curious/concerned/terrified of what the experience might hold in store as I prepared to fly with my daughter and 1-year-old and 4-year-old grandsons from Chicago here to Southern Oregon as her family resettles out West. With son-in-law Dan driving/towing the family vehicles cross-country, I volunteered to be the second adult to help wrangle the kids (and car seats and luggage). We flew from Midway on Southwest to Seattle, with a connecting flight from SeaTac on to Medford. The complication (and greatest concern) came in the form of having to switch airlines (to Delta) in Seattle. (Don't ask, but the reasons had to do with vouchers and miles to be used.)

From Bethpage to Adare: Following the Ryder Cup to Ireland

In September 2025, the eyes of the golf world will turn to New York, where Bethpage Black hosts the Ryder Cup. In 2027, the Ryder Cup will cross the Atlantic, arriving at one of Europe’s most celebrated courses: Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland.

Having a Blast at Morton Arboretum

No matter the time of year, when we visit my daughter's family in the Chicago area, we always try to schedule a visit to the Morton Arboretum, conveniently located for us right in their town in the western suburbs, Lisle. We gift Sarah and Dan with a family membership every Christmas, and there are always special exhibits, performances, classes or plant sales --- in addition to acres and acres of trees, shrubs and flowers --- to take in. Founded by Joy Morton (of Morton Salt fame, and whose father founded Arbor Day) in 1922, the Arboretum's mission is to collect and study trees and plants from around the world and display them in a natural landscape for visitors to enjoy.

Baby on Board

As I boarded my Delta flight back from Los Angeles (LAX), a female passenger handed me a typed note explaining that her infant child was on board (first class) and he was a good baby, but if he cried, they had ear plugs. I asked where she came up with this idea. "The Today Show, she said. I told her the best thing to do if her baby cried would be to walk him up and down the aisles. As a father of two, I know you cannot expect a child to be comfortable for an entire long journey. As they age, it is the responsibility of the parents to make sure enough entertainment is available and they are able to walk around.
