Survey Cites Top Perks of Business Travel

Nov 10, 2017
News

The inaugural American Express Business Travel Survey found a huge majority of U.S. respondents enjoy traveling for business (91 percent).

Some of the perks? Most respondents (67 percent) said experiencing a new country or culture was one of the aspects of business travel they enjoy the most. Other aspects include developing a wider cultural skill set and meeting new people. Plus, 53 percent of respondents said going sightseeing or participating in local experiences positively impacts their personal wellbeing.

However, it’s not always easy to dive into the local culture. Almost half (46 percent) reported committing a cultural faux pas while traveling for business. Only 39 percent said they always research a country’s business customs before traveling, though 86 percent admitted being aware of local business customs makes business traveler easier and more rewarding. The top cultural differences travelers felt they should recognize include how to address others, local dress code and nuances in communication styles.

Other potential travel hurdles the survey found include last-minute travel delays (the most common setback, at 77 percent), connectivity and technology issues, last-minute changes to itineraries and jetlag and lethargy. Respondents indicated premium travel services help to combat these issues, including business-class travel, access to hotel club floors and access to airport lounges.

“Most U.S. business travelers feel that face-to-face meetings are essential to achieving their business objectives and thus it is important that business travel be a stress-free and seamless experience,” said Shane Berry, senior vice president, global client group, global commercial payments, American Express. “Supporting business travelers, by continuing to innovate premium travel services that encourage productivity, connectivity and relaxation, can have a lasting impact on executive wellbeing as well as increasing their company’s bottom line.”
