A two-part installation by artist Zheng Lu is on display in the atrium of The Opposite House, located in Beijing’s Taikoo Li Sanlitun shopping and entertainment district, until Sept. 30. The installation consists of Hongren Landscape, a three-dimensional steel sculpture that pays tribute to 17th-century landscape painter Hong Ren; and Water in Dripping, which melds scripted words and characters from a poem by Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi with moving water.
The installation is particularly fitting to the hotel’s setting, known for its dramatic contrast of modern and ancient elements. The arresting exterior of emerald green glass chosen by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma cocoons a restful interior of 98 wood-floored, open-plan studios and a deluxe two-floor penthouse suite. The hotel’s ground floor serves as gallery space for Chinese artists. There’s also an ultra-modern pool and gym, and the newly opened dining venue Jing Yaa Tang, where menu specialties revolve around Beijing roast duck dishes.
