A new study from Korn Ferry shows half of professionals who stay connected to work during vacation argue with their spouse regarding their behavior.

However, the same survey revealed not staying in touch with the office while away is now abnormal. Nearly half of respondents say they check in with work multiple times a day while vacationing, while only 2 percent say they never check in while on vacation. A third of respondents admit they enjoy checking in with the office while on vacation.

“Those who feel they must always be in touch with the office are missing a critical point,” said Mark Royal, senior principal, Korn Ferry. “Professionals who can turn off the demands of work — even for short periods of time — will be more engaged and productive in the long run.”

The survey also found 63 percent say they cut vacation short due to work demands. Forty-five percent do not plan to use all their vacation time and 73 percent say they’d trade vacation days for a higher salary.

“Clearing the deck for a week off is hard work. But planning better for downtime and negotiating set plug-in times with family and friends when keeping in contact with the office is a must,” added Royal. “It can help professionals focus on the scenery instead of the screen.”
