Starwood Hotels & Resorts partnered with NRG Energy, Inc., to offer clean sustainable energy at The Phoenician, a Luxury Collection Resort, located in Scottsdale, Ariz. The two companies worked together to install a 568-kilowatt solar installation featuring approximately 2,000 photovoltaic solar panels that is expected to offset a portion of the resort’s energy demand equivalent to the energy needs of about 90 homes.

While maintaining its iconic views of Camelback Mountain, The Phoenician is able to reduce its carbon footprint and help Starwood achieve its sustainability goals with the new installation. In addition to sustainability benefits, the panels also offer shade and outdoor event space.

“At Starwood, sustainability is second nature, and our work with NRG Renew at The Phoenician exemplifies our commitment to that idea while also going the extra step to create a better world to experience,” said Ken Siegel, chief administrative officer and general counsel of Starwood and head of Global Citizenship.

The project is the first of several between NRG and Starwood. The hotel company plans to reduce its energy consumption and carbon emissions by 30 percent and water consumption by 20 percent by 2020. Solar systems will soon be installed at The Westin St. John Resort in the U.S. Virgin Islands and The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka’anapali.
