The new Star Alliance lounge at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) opened its doors Sept. 25, providing a luxurious haven for all first, business and Star Alliance Gold Card passengers traveling on member airlines departing the recently renovated Tom Bradley International Terminal.
The 18,000-square-foot lounge, designed by architectural firm Gensler, offers space for 400 travelers, with a separate private lounge for first-class passengers and an open-air terrace overlooking the runway and the Hollywood Hills.
Air New Zealand developed and manages the new lounge. The stunning new space also includes a bar area, a library space, a media room, a seating area outside the lounge doors overlooking the terminal, a study and eight shower rooms. High-speed WiFi is available, as well as printers, fax machines, copy services, power outlets and USB ports.
The lounge décor was inspired Los Angeles and the city’s modernist architectural style of the 1950s and ’60s. Star Alliance seeks to add local flavor to their branded lounges. Black-and-white photographs reminiscent of Los Angeles and shot by Peter Lik carry the theme throughout.
Locally sourced materials were used in the creation of the space, including the glazed ceramic tile feature walls crafted by local artisans. In addition, the lounge was designed in collaboration with the Green Building Council of America to ensure sustainability. The lounge is now pursuing LEED Gold Certification.

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
