Spirit Airlines Cuts Space for Carry-On Luggage

Feb 19, 2017
News

Spirit Airlines, a U.S. budget carrier, is reducing the amount of space allocated to passenger luggage.

The carrier is known for its pay-as-you-go model, combining inexpensive base fares with fees for travel-related extras. Spirit’s base fare includes the ability to carry onboard a single piece of luggage, but now the size of passengers’ items will need to comply with new standards.

“We heard from many customers who told us their laptop bags or larger purses weren’t fitting quite as well under our seats length-wise,” said a spokesperson at Spirit Airlines. “We take customer feedback very seriously, so we’ve adjusted the length to accommodate these popular personal items. We’re still proud to offer one of the largest personal item sizes in the industry.”

Starting April 4, Spirit is reducing the size of luggage permitted under its cheapest fares by 25 percent, from 2,688 cubic inches to 2,016 cubic inches.

Passengers who bring bags that don’t fit in the space will be charged a $100 fee to bring their luggage along or may pay a fee of $26 and up in advance in order to bring larger bags onboard. To avoid the issue entirely, check your luggage for a fee that starts at $50 per bag or bring a small personal item onboard like a shoulder bag, backpack or laptop bag.

Other airlines that compete with Spirit include major carriers like American Airlines and United Airlines that have also started to restrict the ability to carry luggage onboard for those travelers who purchase the lowest-priced airline seats.
