After the United Airlines incident, Southwest Airlines plans to stop the practice of overbooking flights in order to avoid similar situations.

Southwest chief executive officer Gary Kelly revealed the company considered moving away from overbooking flights for a long time, but the issue became more important following the United incident.

“As we have dramatically improved our forecasting tools and techniques, and as we approach the upcoming implementation of our new reservations system on May 9, we no longer have a need to overbook as part of the revenue management inventory process,” said a Southwest spokesperson.

Beth Harbin, Southwest spokeswoman, said the new technology and an improved reservation system scheduled to debut this month will no longer require the airline to overbook flights. When the new rules and regulations go into effect, Southwest will join JetBlue as the only major airline in the United States to currently ban overbooking. United Airlines said it would work to reduce overbooking, but has no plans to eliminate the practice completely.

The carrier did not specify a timeframe for the policy change. Company officials said the decision will have a minor impact on revenue but plans to offset it by not having to compensate passengers on overbooked flights.

Southwest admitted to bumping people sporadically if the airline substitutes a smaller plane for the one originally scheduled.
