Last month, a Southwest Airlines engine explosion mid-flight caused the death of a passenger and an emergency landing.

Southwest issued an official statement in response to the tragedy:

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that there is one fatality resulting from this accident. The entire Southwest Airlines Family is devastated and extends its deepest, heartfelt sympathy to the customers, employees, family members and loved ones affected by this tragic event. We have activated our emergency response team and are deploying every resource to support those affected by this tragedy.”

In addition to the death, which happened while the passenger was being transported to the hospital, seven others were injured and treated on the scene by medical personnel.

The National Transportation Safety Board said the engine explosion caused the plane to make an emergency landing in Philadelphia; it was traveling from New York to Dallas.

The NTSB is investigating.

The engine began to break apart in mid-flight, sending debris into the cabin and causing the plane to depressurize. One woman near the window was reportedly sucked toward it, and other passengers helped pull her back in.
