Southwest Adds Slots At LGA

Southwest Airlines has acquired 12 takeoff and landing slots (for six round-trip flights) at New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA). American Airlines is divesting the slots as part of its merger with US Airways. In addition, Southwest gained permanent control of the 10 takeoff and landing slots (for five round-trip flights) it currently operates under a lease agreement with American. Southwest plans to begin its new service at LGA in May 2014.

“We are pleased the U.S. Department of Justice approved our agreement with American Airlines to acquire these slots at LaGuardia,” said Bob Jordan, executive vice president and CCO, Southwest. “This is terrific news for … customers who want greater access to New York City.”

Southwest and its subsidiary AirTran Airways now operate 27 daily round-trip flights to and from LGA to eight non-stop destinations. In addition to LGA, Southwest currently serves Newark Liberty International (EWR) and Long Island MacArthur Airport in the New York area.

“We also look forward to bidding on the slots at Washington’s Reagan National Airport (DCA) that American also is required to divest,” Jordan added. “That will be conducted as a separate process, and was not a part of this slot bid.”

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
