Due to commercial airlines’ unhealthy contributions to the environment, aviation companies around the world are searching for alternative ways to fuel aircraft, including the use of biofuels. One airline in particular, South African Airways, developed a biofuel from the locally grown tobacco plant. South African Airways has been able to manufacture a nicotine-free tobacco plant, grown in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. After nine months of growth and cultivation, 30 percent of the processed plant is set aside and refined to use as jet fuel. The first flight using this fuel took off on July 15, with 300 passengers and flew from Johannesburg (JNB) to Cape Town (CPT) using 6,300 liters of the homegrown fuel. South African Airways hopes to continue to use this fuel in the future, and by the end of 2017, the airline plans to use 20 million liters as a replacement for harmful varieties of jet fuel.
