South Africa Jumps on Canned Wine Trend

Drinking Cans of Wine

Daily

If you’ve been to South Africa, toured the vineyards and love the wine, you might be glad to hear you can enjoy your South African vino in a brand-new way. Some might say it’s sacrilegious, but South African wine has officially met the canned wine trend.

Lubanzi Wines, one of the country’s fastest-growing brands, is now the first South African wine producer to launch canned wines in the United States.

Lubanzi, based in Cape Town as of 2016, boasts status as a social enterprise, with a goal of creating a sustainable and equitable supply chain. Profits are shared with The Pebbles Project, a South African non-profit that provides health and education resources to wine farm laborers.

“If any country embodies the spirit that has supported the boom of canned wine, it is South Africa,” the company said in a statement. “The category is fantastic fun, but the quality’s the same. These wines are the same ones that go into our bottles.”

“Everything we’ve tried to do, up until this point, has not only been about trying to make great, forward-thinking, clean and affordable wines, but also about trying to connect and showcase Cape Town and The Western Cape as a whole, a place whose cultural identity, it’s [sic] very spirit and essence, coincidentally, we think, falls so deeply in line with the growing cultural identity that now surrounds wine in cans,” added the company. “Venturing with bright eyes into the canned wine movement felt like a natural extension of who we are as a business and a brand, and a very due and deserved step in South Africa’s journey to claiming its rightful place, in quality and in innovation, at the American table.”

Amansara Review

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
