The Venice Music Project’s fourth concert season is in full swing in Italy’s most famous watery city. Playing on period instruments (or exact replicas) that bring the sounds of the Baroque era to pitch-perfect life, musicians include the project’s resident Venetia Antiqua orchestra, special guest performers and soprano and co-founder Liesl Odenweller. In conjunction with Venice’s anniversary of its 500-year-old Jewish Ghetto, the musical troupe Lucidarium will perform selections from Sounds from Shylock’s Venice Oct. 29–30, with Jewish baroque-era compositions in Italian, Hebrew, Yiddish and Spanish. This season, musical performances include A Venetian Affair, highlighted by spoken readings from clandestine love letters written during the 1700s. Sung by Odenweller, the performance is narrated by author Andrea di Robilant. Robilant provides a unique personal connection to the letters, which were written between his own great-great-great-great-great grandfather and a secret lover. The letters were discovered by Robilant’s family in their ancestral palazzo located on the Grand Canal. Performances take place at the historic St. George’s Anglican Church, located between the Accademia Bridge and the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. The Venice Music Project is part of the ongoing efforts to restore the ancient church and its artworks.
