Chances are good you’re already familiar with Denmark’s beautiful landscapes, Hamlet drama and Hans Christian Andersen tales — but there’s more, and you’ll have to look below the surface. For starters, there’s Rubjerg Knude, a lighthouse nearly completely buried by shifting beach sands. It’s estimated that the structure, which once towered above the sea and was fully operational up until 1968, will be completely covered within the next couple of years.

On Denmark’s northernmost tip in Skagen, 14^th-century Saint Laurence church, named for the patron saint of seafarers, has also been claimed by shifting sands. Only the tower remains, though records show that by the end of the 18th century, members of the congregation were required to dig their way to the entrance for services. In Helsingør, the new Maritime Museum of Denmark, designed by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, is a stunning space located underground between Kronborg Castle and The Culture Yard.
