Airlines Reporting Corporation and Expedia partnered to create the 2018 Air Travel Outlook Report, using airline ticket data from September 2016–August 2017 to identify key trends.
The study found lowest average ticket prices for economy flights are available on Sundays. Additionally, booking economy tickets more than 30 days ahead of travel results in better pricing.
Best days for international economy travel by price are Thursday and Friday.
Travelers booking a business- or first-class ticket can book on either a Saturday or Sunday to find the best deal. The report attributed this to the decreased likelihood of a business traveler booking business travel on a weekend. Like economy tickets, booking premium tickets more than 30 days out results in higher savings.
Best days for international business- or first-class travel by price are Friday and Saturday. Departing on these days, said the report, can save premium travelers as much as 43 percent.
North American travelers pay the highest average ticket prices in December for international economy travel from the United States, and July for international economy travel from Canada. The lowest average ticket prices are paid in February for both U.S. and Canadian international economy flights. For premium domestic travel, June holds the highest average ticket prices for U.S. travelers while October holds the highest average ticket prices for Canadian travelers.
