Renovations to public spaces and tower rooms at the New York Palace are wrapping up, with completion scheduled for June. Rich in crystal chandeliers and marble columns, this glamorous mansion-turned-hotel was once the private dwelling of railroad millionaire Henry Villard. Facing Madison Avenue and boasting its own Italian-inspired courtyard and topiary garden, it provides an Old World oasis close to top shopping, museums and restaurants.
With space for 899 guestrooms, it’s difficult to imagine how Villard filled his one-time home with personal furnishings. Today, the vaulted former drawing room serves as the Madison Room restaurant, featuring original wall panels painted by French artist Pierre-Victor Galland that were placed in 1891. Other areas of the home have been converted to house a 7,000 square-foot spa and fitness center with scented steam baths and high-tech workout equipment.
