Passengers using New York’s LaGuardia Airport may soon have additional flight options, as regulators consider ending the airport’s longstanding ban on flights longer than 1,500 miles.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the agency controlling New York’s three major airports, announced it is analyzing LaGuardia’s 30-year-old perimeter rule “to determine whether it remains in the best interest of the region’s air travelers,” according to a statement. Changes would be implemented only after a “thorough study and analysis and consultation with all interested parties.”
The Port Authority formally introduced the rule in 1984 as a way to encourage airlines to fly out of New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport at a time when LaGuardia was already at capacity.
Removing the ban would allow carriers to launch new transcontinental flights between LaGuardia and West Coast gateways like Los Angeles International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, Las Vegas McCarran International Airport and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport — all currently only served by JFK and EWR. Lifting the ban would also potentially make it more difficult for passengers to book service to smaller markets as long-haul flights are introduced.
“The mix of flights at La Guardia would change materially,” Mike Boyd, president, aviation-consulting firm Boyd Group International, told The Wall Street Journal. “Why would you have a 50-seat jet going to Charlottesville when that slot can be used for a 150-seat jet going to Seattle?”
The Journal reports a removal of the ban could also pave the way for international routes from LaGuardia from airports that can pre-clear U.S.-bound travelers under agreements with U.S. border officials, as LaGuardia lacks a federal border-clearance facility. These include destinations like Dublin Airport and Vancouver International Airport.
Would you make use of long-haul flights from LaGuardia? Have you visited the airport lately? How was your experience? Email us. Please include your full name and location with your email.
