Several U.S. airlines recently began using new rebooking systems to help eliminate the hassle associated with canceled flights. The new technology makes it less likely travelers will be stranded at the airport due to inclement weather delays or canceled flights. Delta Air Lines began using a new automated rebooking system in January called Viper. The technology weighs factors like which passengers will miss connections, reports The Wall Street Journal. It allows customers to select rebooking options rather than the previous take-it-or-leave-it approach. Viper’s birth means Delta is reducing the average delay during irregular operations from between two to nine hours compared to 15 hours in 2012. United Airlines also instituted a new rebooking system that allows the airline to rebook passengers faster and also eliminates the likelihood of passengers having to wait all night in the airport for the next flight. Over at Southwest, a new system called Baker automates the rebooking process, which used to be done manually by employees. It reduces cancelations and helps rebook more quickly. American Airlines plans similar implementations next year. “The airline that can figure out how to best handle these circumstances, keep customers informed, give them opportunities, avoid long lines and long waits, I think, is really going to be providing superior customer service,” Jill Surdek, vice president of customer planning, American Airlines, told the WSJ.
