Qantas notched a worldwide first last month as it completed the first commercial flight to produce zero waste.

The airline committed to eliminate 75 percent of its onboard waste by the end of 2021, and use 100 million fewer single-use plastics by the close of 2020.

All products on the airline’s flight QF739 from Sydney (SYD) to Adelaide (ADL) last month went to compost, were reused or recycled. The flight would usually throw out about 34 kilograms of waste, with the Sydney to Adelaide route producing 150 tons of waste annually.

The airline substituted around 1,000 single-use plastic items for sustainable alternatives or removed them altogether, including individually packaged servings of milk and Vegemite. The airline used meal containers made from sugar cane, cutlery made from crop starch and cabin crew collected used papers and printed boarding passes to recycle.

The flight was also carbon-offset by the airline. This year, Qantas started offering 10 Qantas Points for every dollar spent, offsetting travel from Australia. The program plants trees in parts of Australia and New Zealand vulnerable to deforestation.

“In the process of carrying over 50 million people every year, Qantas and Jetstar currently produce an amount of waste equivalent to 80 fully-laden Boeing 747 jumbo jets,” Andrew David, CEO, Qantas Domestic, said. “We want to give customers the same level of service they currently enjoy, but without the amount of waste that comes with it.”

Mindfulness City in Kingdom of Bhutan Unveiled as Future Economic Hub

In front of an audience of 30,000 Kingdom of Bhutan residents and officials, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck presented his vision for a new economic hub in Bhutan. Located between India to the south and China to the north, Bhutan is one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Bhutan came late to global tourism. It opened its borders to international visitors in 1974 and, while tourism definitely increased, residents are enduring “light” rush-hour traffic in Thimphu, its capital city, as the only Asian capital without traffic lights.
