October’s deadly Russian jet crash in Egypt put a major dent in an already suffering North Africa tourism industry, and an interesting pattern is now emerging: Resorts in the greater region, seen as less risky places to travel, are catching a windfall.

Last year, 9.9 million people visited Egypt, and half stayed at Red Sea resorts. But that was a big drop from the staggering 14.7 million who visited the country in 2010, prior to the Arab Spring uprisings. Tourism experts expect those numbers to further plummet following the Russian jet crash that killed all 224 people on board, considering the fact Britain and Russia, which previously contributed 62 percent of the tourists in Sharm el-Sheikh before the crash, discontinued flights to the area.

These destinations, seen as safe alternatives for visitors, are likely to benefit from the recent bad news: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Oman, Russia, Turkey and Cyprus. Traditional resorts, especially those in the Western Mediterranean, are likely to see more visitors too.
