Pilotless Flights?

Aug 18, 2017
News

Pilotless planes may soon be more common than you think — would you be willing to climb onboard?

According to research from the UBS, a transition to pilotless commercial flights could save the aviation industry billions of dollars. The new report determined the airline industry could save as much as $35 billion per year by doing away with traditional human pilots. The results showed only 54 percent of people agree to take a pilotless flight, including just 17 percent of travelers from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Australia.

“The technologies in development today will enable the aircraft to assist and back up the pilot in all the flight phases, removing the pilot from manual control and systems operations in all types of situations,” according to the UBS report.

While the technology is still years away, the industry needs to clear numerous hurdles to make it happen. Remote-controlled planes could exist by 2025, but automated commercial flights aren’t possible until beyond 2030. Additionally, the industry would encounter backlash from pilot unions and have to overcome strict air traffic laws.

Current pilots spend only a few minutes manually flying aircraft but constantly monitor and adjust the aircraft’s systems while on autopilot. If pilotless flights were to occur, airfare would be about 11 percent cheaper in the United States.

One push behind pilotless flights is the high number of new pilots needed to operate new aircraft as well as fill the void of soon-to-be retiring pilots, expected to spike in the next decade. CNN Money reported commercial and cargo airlines around the world will need 637,000 new pilots, 2017–2036.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
