Following a World Animal Protection report claiming Bali is the worst destination in the world for animal cruelty, Care2 presents a petition asking TripAdvisor to add a warning to its Bali pages, informing travelers of the report’s findings. The report showed 100 percent of the destination’s 26 venues offering captive animal experiences to tourists did not meet the basic needs of wild animals in captivity.

“Tourists need information so they can better decide if they want to financially support an island that supports animal cruelty,” said Rebecca Gerber, senior director of engagement, Care2. “Care2 members believe TripAdvisor should help tourists to make that decision.”

The Care2 petition notes, “TripAdvisor, many tourists’ go-to website for travel planning, tells its users that ‘Bali is a living postcard, an Indonesian paradise that feels like a fantasy.’ It’s reviews like these that help Bali bring in millions of tourism dollars, but it is also only part of the story. Would tourists flock to Bali if they knew the scale of violence and cruelty that the animals of the island had to endure? We think not, and we think travel companies like TripAdvisor have a duty to warn their users about the island’s abhorrent animal abuse before they buy their ticket.”

In unveiling the World Animal Protection report, WAP CEO Steve McIvor agreed elephant rides, dolphin swims, orangutan selfies and other animal experiences are popular with tourists, who should know the conditions animals often endure.
