The illustrious French capital city has been at the forefront of climate change since it served as host city during the signing of the 2016 climate accord, and well before that. Paris continues to set an example in the world of green initiatives with its latest plan to reduce carbon emissions.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced a city plan to eliminate all gas-powered vehicles from Paris proper by 2030, with a further-reaching goal to be completely carbon-free by the year 2050.

Rather than institute an all-out ban on gas-fueled cars, the initiative instead focuses on developing and implementing alternative technologies for transport and making these services more accessible to companies and private citizens.

The plan won’t be a huge adjustment for Parisians as nearly 60 percent of residents do not own cars, and the city recently opened a handful of new bike lanes for commuters who previously relied on highly congested thoroughfares to commute into the city.
