Nov. 23–April 2, 2018, the works of Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani will be on view at the Tate Modern in London. Spanning the artist’s career from his arrival in Paris in 1906 through his later artistic challenge of the era’s strict mores and canons, the exhibition includes close to 100 works. An entire section is devoted to Modigliani’s nudes, often considered his most notable and beguiling paintings. When displayed during the artist’s only solo exhibition in 1917 at Berthe Weill’s Paris gallery, there was an initial outcry of indecency leading to police censorship; and later, a glorious revolution in modern figurative painting.

Among the selections on display will be several on loan from other major museums, including Seated Nude (1917, on loan from the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp) and Reclining Nude (c. 1919, on loan from the Museum of Modern Art, New York). The exhibition will include a virtual reality room created in partnership with leader in virtual reality platforms HTC VIVE, utilizing archival materials and current true-to-life technology, allowing visitors to step inside Modigliani’s Paris. Also part of the exhibition will be a number of lesser-known works from his sculptural phase, including carvings created prior to World War I; along with paintings influenced by Paul Cézanne, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and Pablo Picasso.
