Norwegian Air International earned tentative approval to fly to the United States. The U.S. Department of Transportation released a statement last month saying it would allow the airline to begin operating in the United States, with the first direct flight between Boston (BOS) and Cork, Ireland (ORK), pending final approval. With Norwegian known for lower-cost flights, this move may pave the way for less expensive trans-Atlantic travel in the United States. The approval now moves to public comment, which will be considered before DOT makes its final decision. Norwegian CEO Bjørn Kjos called the approval a “win win for consumers and the economy on both sides of the Atlantic” in a statement. He also said the move will “create thousands of jobs” in the United States. The approval has been two years in the making, but has been fought by American unions who raised concerns DOT didn’t have enough legal basis to affect the application.
