Thanks to new changes taking effect in 2016, if you reside in one of nine states, you may have to carry a passport to get through airport security — even if you’re not leaving the country.
The Department of Homeland Security will start enforcing provisions of the RealID Act, meant to make fake IDs harder to create. U.S. states and territories were instructed to comply with new requirements when issuing new identification, including asking for more forms of identity in the issuing process.
Several states/territories chose not to comply: Alaska, California, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Carolina, Washington, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Reports have been circulating that residents of these states will now have to carry a passport to get through airport security, regardless of their destination. But it’s unclear right now whether DHS will actually enforce that. If they do, the public will have at least 120 days notice before that goes into effect.
