New York City is planning a slew of subway upgrades including WiFi, bigger cars and more frequent services, all part of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s plan to bring the city’s public transportation system into the 21^st century. Last month, Cuomo revealed the plans to the delight of the millions of people in New York City who rely on the system on a daily basis. Stations tend to be crowded, hot and generally lacking any technological advances. That will change with a new five-year plan to spend $27 billion on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Program. Investments will include 1,025 new subway cars to reduce wait time and increase capacity, including 750 open-ended cars to replace the segmented trains to allow for greater passenger flow and increased capacity. Car doors will increase in size by eight inches, which will further help speed up the boarding process. WiFi, USB charging ports and colored digital information signs will be standard on all new cars. Station makeovers are in the plan, too, with 31 getting complete renovations. These stations will be outfitted with digital signs, real-time information, WiFi and cell service. “New York deserves a world-class transportation network, worthy of its role as the heartbeat of the 21st-century economy,” Cuomo said at an announcement ceremony. “We are going to do more than renovate — we are bringing subway stations to a higher standard than ever before, and the new vision for subway cars will increase capacity and reduce overcrowding and delays.”
