New Training Program For Galapagos Islands Guides

The International Galapagos Tour Operators Association is partnering with the Galapagos National Park Directorate and World Wildlife Fund Ecuador, to improve the quality of guiding in the islands. The move is part of a long-term effort to preserve and protect the world famous archipelago.

IGTOA is helping organize a Training of Trainers guide-training certification course this November. The course was rolled out late last year with 10 elite national park guides who are now officially certified Galapagos National Park Guide Trainers. This is the first such park-sanctioned certification in the history of the Galapagos Islands.

“When properly trained, guides are the most effective ambassadors for conservation that the Galapagos can have; the quality of guiding has a huge impact not only on the overall quality of visitor experience, but also on the impressions those visitors form about the importance of conserving the islands,” says Jim Lutz, IGTOA board president, who was on hand for the full two-week course.

Overall, the development should improve the visitor experience on the islands, as well as create continuity across guides’ presentations. It’s also a great way to bring visitors on board as stewards of the area.

“Visitors can play an important role in the ongoing protection and conservation of the Galapagos Islands. But first they need to truly understand the threats to this fragile ecosystem,” explains Matt Kareus, executive director, IGTOA. “This training allows guides to better understand and communicate these challenges and opportunities to the 200,000 visitors who come to the park each year.”

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
