In Chicago’s South Side Hyde Park neighborhood, construction is underway on SOPHY, a 98-room boutique hotel. An opening is planned for summer 2018, and the New York-based interior design team from Stonehill & Taylor Architects and project architects GREC Architects of Chicago are busy integrating inspiration drawn from science, mathematics, art, literature and gospel music into the space.
Once completed, the hotel’s interior will showcase works by contemporary Chicago artists, and fun elements such as barn doors and details drawn from the World’s Columbian Exposition. These include a number of circular motifs representing the first Ferris Wheel, which debuted at the exposition. The hotel’s address at 53rd Street and Dorchester Avenue is not far from the University of Chicago campus, the Museum of Science and Industry and the future location of the Barack Obama Presidential Library.
