A newly commissioned public art installation by Anselm Kiefer has been unveiled at the entrance to Rockefeller Center’s Channel Gardens on Fifth Avenue in New York City. On view until July 22, “Uraeus” depicts a massive open book framed by lead eagle’s wings spanning 30 feet. The sculpture is positioned on a 20-foot tall column constructed of lead and clad in stainless steel.
Steeped in symbolism, the work’s title represents an upright Egyptian cobra and the serpent-goddess Wadjet, who stood for divine power. Kiefer was inspired in part by the philosophical fiction Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1891) by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.
Works by German-born Kiefer have exhibited globally and have been shown at major museums throughout the world, including The Art Institute of Chicago; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao; Louisiana Museum of Art, Denmark; and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
