Nepal is still suffering from the 2015 earthquakes, which killed more than 8,000 and left more than 3.5 million homeless. However, Nepal is showing considerable efforts to rebound from the tragedy and is looking to tourism as a way to boost the economy and help the country rebuild. Tourism currently makes up about 10 percent of the country’s GDP, and employs around half a million people.

The Nepalese capital of Kathmandu, home to seven UNESCO World Heritage monuments, draws the most visitors, but Tourism Cares urges travelers to look past the main attractions. While they’re certainly worth your time, there are other tours and programs that also help to give back to the community and make travelers’ dollars go further toward the country’s revitalization efforts. Some of the most notable include those offered by Seeing Hands, Next Generation Nepal and Social Tours.

In addition to working to inform and educate travelers, Tourism Cares also works behind the scenes to provide communities with hospitality training and certification, as well as technology access. With its help, 40 hospitality providers in the region have been able to achieve the training and certification necessary to open their own businesses.
