Located near the museums and historic sites of Washington, D.C., National Harbor in Maryland is the place to be in spring, when cherry trees are in bloom and great outdoor festivals and events help shake off the chill of winter.

There are more than 200 Okame cherry trees in National Harbor, many of which can be enjoyed while strolling the waterfront. And, from March 21 to April 12, the Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates the return of spring with offerings like cherry blossom origami classes with Michiko Okuma at McCormick & Schmick’s March 21, and at Grace’s Mandarin on March 22.

Prefer to capture the essence of blossoms in paint? Through April, Muse Paintbar offers themed classes during paint-and-sip events. Area restaurants and bars have cherry blossom-inspired nibbles and drinks, while Potomac Water Taxi has cherry blossom cruises allowing for a relaxing way to enjoy the blooms and pink lights illuminating The Capital Wheel and Waterfront District.

“National Harbor has grown over the past 18 years and provides a variety of options for families to see and do,” said Deborah Topcik, senior director, marketing, National Harbor. “With eight hotels to choose from, more than 40 restaurants, outlet and boutique shopping, multiple entertainment venues and all types of outdoor activities, it’s a premier destination for a vacation or a weekend getaway. Because National Harbor is so easy to navigate and has great walkability, it’s the perfect location for families and a great place to bring together multiple generations.”

There are plenty of other events to look forward to, as well. Other spring highlights include Garden Bros. Nuclear Circus from March 12 to 22. More than 60 performers from around the globe gather together in an exuberant display of stunts that include the Globe of Death, human cannonball, aerial performances and plenty of comedy.

From March 27 to 29, the Water Lantern Festival brings sparkle to the waterfront. Decorated lighted lanterns bearing messages of hope, love, unity and remembrance are brought to the waterfront and released in an enclosed area, filling the night with light and a deep sense of community.

Sun, Sea, Cliffs and Bridges Beckon on the Pacific Coast Highway

On one side, waves breathe in and out across wide stretches of sand or explode against jagged rocks, sending spray shooting into the air. On the other side, the scenery changes: Cliffs rise like walls, vineyards clip past in neat rows, pine trees line the road. Between these, cities give way to small communities with art galleries, local restaurants and shops selling beachwear.

Costa Rica’s Distinctive and Sustainable Venues Prevail

Spend any amount of time in Costa Rica and youwill become quite familiar with the country’s motto: pura vida. Translated as “pure life,” this daily mantra depicts a relaxed, optimistic and grateful lifestyle. It is a way of saying hello, goodbye or even thank you. It captures the national character of resilience, peace and cherishing life’s simple, joyful moments. With its focus on sustainability, biodiversity, wellness and peace, Costa Rica can be euphemistically named “the responsible sibling of the Central American family.”
