This year’s edition of the Galway International Arts Festival (July 16–29) will include the world premiere of “Orfeo ed Euridice,” performed by the Irish National Opera. Christoph Willibald Von Gluck wrote the opera, based on the myth of Orpheus’s journey into the underworld to rescue his wife Euridice.
Produced through partnership between United Fall and the Irish Baroque Orchestra, the opera is performed in Italian with English subtitles. Directed and choreographed by Emma Martin, this lavish, full-scale production blends song, music and dance in an innovative presentation, conducted by Peter Whelan and featuring Irish mezzo-soprano Sharon Carty and sopranos Sarah Power and Emma Nash, along with the Irish Baroque Orchestra and the Irish National Opera Chorus.
“Orfeo ed Euridice” will debut July 23, with performances July 23–29 at the Town Hall Theatre in Galway. A full schedule of events, other performers, shows and venues for this year’s festival is available online.
