Mumbai’s airport (BOM) set a record for the busiest single-runway airport in the world when it handled 980 flights in 24 hours on Jan. 20. It broke its own record of 974 flights in 24 hours set Dec. 6, 2017.
The airport saw 837 flights a day in March 2017, overtaking London Gatwick Airport as the busiest single-runway airport in the world. Gatwick’s record was 757 flights at a time, and it operates around 870 flights a day. The single-runway airport sees less movement than Mumbai, but it’s still considered more efficient because it’s only operational for 19 hours a day.
“The most important difference between Gatwick and Mumbai is the environment the two airports are set in. Mumbai airport functions in a space-starved, infrastructure-constrained environment, unlike any other. More flights can’t be added onto Mumbai’s single runway without a holistic approach that takes into account the ground realities, India’s regulatory framework, human factors, etc.,” said a senior air traffic controller from Mumbai in an interview with The Times of India.
London has four airports, whereas Mumbai is served by only Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
