After the first drive-in movie theater opened 85 years ago in Camden, New Jersey, drive-in movies became a staple from the late 1950s through the 60s and 70s. Today, the number of drive-ins dwindled from 4,000 at the height of their popularity to around 330 remaining venues. You can still experience this classic American pastime in South Carolina and in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley.
One ticket allows you to watch all films showing on three separate screens at the 25 Drive-In Auto Theatre in Greenwood, South Carolina. The space is home to three of the largest movie screens on the East Coast, and the concession stand is known far and wide for its menu. The owners bring restaurant backgrounds to the cuisine and offer a particularly memorable cheeseburger experience, along with authentic Southern barbecue — open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer months.
Set within the legendary Thoroughbred horse country near Aiken, The Big Mo (Monetta Drive-In Theatre) offers double features on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights on three screens. The theater is open during spring, summer and fall with between-show intermission trivia contests.
Double features on two separate screens and specialty coffee drinks set Highway 21 Drive-In apart. Located close to Savannah, Charleston and Hilton Head, this drive-in screens first-run releases and family favorites. Open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in Beaufort, South Carolina.
