A recent study conducted by swimwear brand Pour Moi discovered international destinations with the most popular travel aesthetic for 2023. Those unfamiliar with the social media craze on platforms like Pinterest and TikTok may not be fully aware of what a travel aesthetic is; in essence, you know it when you see it, as these spots make for great photographs and videos.
The study utilized both Pinterest boards and Google search data to unveil the places inspiring younger generations.
The study revealed the top 10 travel aesthetics by country:
- Japan
- Greece
- France
- Italy
- India
- Brazil
- Mexico
- China
- United Kingdom
- Spain
Japan takes the top spot with the most popular travel aesthetic, with thousands of videos and photos of places throughout the country, featuring iconic images from neon lights, to crowded streets to cherry blossom trees to green forests. Greece comes in second thanks to well-known spots like the white-and-blue buildings of Santorini against the azure waters and ancient ruins scattered throughout the country.
The study also looked at the top travel aesthetics by city and found the top 10 cities are:
- Paris, France
- New York City, New York, United States
- London, United Kingdom
- Tokyo, Japan
- Miami, Florida, United States
- Los Angeles, California, United States
- Seoul, South Korea
- Dubai, United Arab Emirates
- Chicago, Illinois, United States
- Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
While these different cities and countries promise beautiful views and memorable experiences, travel experts like James Chapman warn travelers to not expect perfect results when visiting these places. Having too high expectations often leads to disappointment.
“Anything that gets people excited about travel and exploring new places is great, and part of the enjoyment of a holiday is the pre-trip planning around where to go and what to see,” said Chapman. “However, I think we need to be careful about being caught out with unrealistic expectations. Anywhere that is heavily featured on social media will often be busy with tourists, and there’s always the risk it won’t live up to the perfect online images. Besides, sometimes the most truly breathtaking and beautiful places are those off the beaten track and aren’t on everyone’s mood boards yet.”
