Mastercard released its MasterCard Destination Cities Index, ranking 132 cities based on both overnight visitors and overnight visitor spending in 2016.
Bangkok ranks as the top city for international overnight visitors, with nearly 20 million in 2016, and a projected growth of 4 percent in 2017. Following in descending order are London, Paris, Dubai, Singapore, New York, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo and Istanbul.
Dubai, however, is the top destination for international overnight visitor spending, with $28.5 billion, and a projected growth of 10 percent in 2017. New York took second place, but is quite a way behind, at $17 billion, and only a 1.5 percent projected growth. Following more closely are London, Singapore, Bangkok, Paris, Tokyo, Taipei, Seoul and Barcelona.
Total visitor growth to all 132 destinations considered since 2009 is 55.2 percent, with the highest performers over that timeframe being Osaka, Chengdu and Colombo, all with growth rates of more than 20 percent.
Additionally, the report points out most of the travel recorded is leisure travel, although, in Shanghai, nearly half of all travel recorded was business-related. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Kuala Lumpur claims the highest percentage of leisure travelers, at more than 92 percent.
The report also pointed out cities known for certain types of spending. For example, dining accounts for the greatest percentage of visitor spending when in Istanbul, while shopping consumes the greatest percentage of visitor spending while in Seoul. Likewise, lodging claims the heftiest portion of visitor spending while in Paris.
“We are seeing more people than ever visiting cities for business or leisure. At the same time, we know that people expect their experiences when traveling to be both seamless and personal. The call to action is clear. Cities that apply technology to simplify services and connect people with their passion points can become true destination cities and realize the benefits of increased visitors and greater spending,” said Carlos Menendez, president of enterprise partnerships, Mastercard.
